Quite the step up from the Mark 1, largely in part to listening to their own customers, Jaguar began producing the stylish Mark 2 Saloon sedan in 1957. The Mark 2's attractive luxury presentation looked as sharp as much higher priced English marks, was quite fast, and made a useful everyday sedan, setting forth the motto “Grace, Pace, & Space” by its creator Sir Williams Lyons. It was also known as the Gentleman's Express by gaining favor among Britain's bank robbers as a getaway car!
Jaguar utilized the latest technology in the Mark 2 by providing disc brakes all around as standard equipment on its already proven and sought-after double wishbone suspension with coil springs, telescopic shock absorbers, and anti-roll bar in the front. Jaguar's increased focus on comfort shows not just in the soft leather and walnut wood veneer interior, but also in the front suspension being mounted on a separate sub-frame. Being of unibody design, this saloon sedan really gripped the road and handled quick turns with ease, improving the quality of the road manners while also increasing the space inside the cabin considerably. It was offered with 3 engine choices ranging from 2.4L, 3.4L, and the robust 3.8L engine shared with the XKE including the same block, crank, connecting rods and pistons but different inlet manifold featuring dual SU6 carburation instead of three. Jaguar continued production of the 3.8 Liter Mark 2 until 1967 before being downgraded and re-badged as the 240 and 340.
We are very proud to offer this gorgeous 1965 Jaguar Mark 2 Saloon having had a complete, professional nut-and-bolt restoration by Lex Classics in the Netherlands! Powered by its number's matching DOHC 3.8L engine with dual exhaust pipes, it provides 220 Horsepower and stout 240 lb. ft. of torque through a Borg Warner automatic transmission with overdrive and limited slip rear axle! This special Mark 2 also had the benefit of added options including power steering and upgraded 15” chrome wire wheels. Truly a sight to see, this Mark 2 has been restored to near perfection! Included is a photo album of just how in-depth and elegant the process was of bringing such a beautiful vehicle back to its well-deserved glory!
The original engine was made new again with all fresh internals and a thorough cleaning. The carburetors rebuilt along with oil seals and all gaskets replaced. All new brake components and lines were installed. Rear axle internals were rebuilt. The original generator was removed and converted to an alternator system. The body was stripped of its original Black paint and finished in a spectacular Gun Metal Gray. The exquisite interior was completely reupholstered in new Cognac Leather, refinished wood trim, and fresh weather stripping throughout. Chrome moldings, door handles, and bumpers were re-plated or replaced. New rubber mounts and new suspension parts were fitted. Along with new taillights and headlamps the entire exhaust was replaced with a new stainless steel system. With exception to the addition of modern air conditioning components, upgraded radiator with Evans waterless cooling system, added koni classic shock absorbers, an electric cooling fan, a new rear sway bar and an auxiliary oil cooler, everything was tastefully redone to original Jaguar specifications. Nothing was left untouched throughout the process.
Any Jaguar enthusiast or beginning collector alike will appreciate the energy and workmanship that went into this piece of history, and how it was so meticulously restored to such a remarkable state!
