On March 9th, 1964, Lee Iacocca made himself an eternal place in American automotive history with the release of a car that would reshape the design and performance expectations for all automobiles sold within the North American market for the next fifty years—the Ford Mustang! The Mustang was the original “pony car” as a purpose-built performance vehicle with its sights set on creating a new niche within the automotive sphere with a focus on targeting sports car minded individuals with a budget. And right from the start, the Ford Mustang was a huge success!
Riding the wave of its success in the first two years, Ford released the slightly redesigned 1967 model and introduced a host of new performance engines and model variants as well as new interior and trim options. Featured here is a gorgeous, San Jose-built 1967 Ford Mustang GT Fastback that has been fully restored cosmetically and mechanically! It is now finished in highly desired Raven Black over new Ginger Ruffino Comfortweave vinyl interior. According to the standard Marti Report, it came very well equipped with factory options that included the S-code 390ci V8-4bbl rated at 320 horsepower, 4-speed manual transmission, California emission controls, GT Equipment Group adding grill-mounted fog lamps, power disc brakes, suspension handling package, & dual exhaust with chrome tips, GT gas cap & GT fender badges with side stripes; Exterior Décor Group consisting of a hood with rear-facing louvres with recessed turn signals; along with power steering, AM push-button radio, with F70-14 Wide Oval white sidewall tires!
It now sports a professional restoration with subtle enhancements and modern upgrades. Beginning outside with stunning paint professionally refinished in 2017 with all window glass, stainless trim, and brightwork removed. The rust free body is now protected underneath several coats of modern base & clear coats providing a wonderful, deep finish that was color sanded to a mirrorlike reflection! All body mounting hardware, stainless trim, specific Ford emblems, the rear taillight panel, and chrome components were replaced. It also received new front and rear window glass from Auto City Classic, Inc. with all new door, trunk, hood, and window weather stripping. It was then dressed up with gray 15” American Racing mono cast wheels with spinners!
Inside the cabin, all new black pile carpet, a new interior kit from TMI added fresh seat upholstery & seat foams, front seat tracks, new door panels, headliner, sun visors, arm rests, dash pad, custom leather wrapped steering wheel, seat belts, instrument bezel & lenses, handles & knobs, door sill plates, and even a new working electric dash clock were professionally fitted!
Powered by its original 390ci block and heads that were handed over to Mike Mastin of Conesus, NY for a full, comprehensive rebuild. All components were cleaned & glass beaded, then he align-honed the mains, bored the cylinders .040 over and opened up the oil passages. Speed Pro forged pistons were selected with SCAT rods, the crank was ground with new Professional Products harmonic balancer, and a new Comp Cam installed with all new main, cam, & rod bearings. An Edelbrock Performer Air Gap aluminum intake and Holley 770cfm Street Avenger carb were fitted for optimum air & fuel flow, along with new HEI distributor/coil. An aluminum radiator with twin, digital thermatic-controlled electric cooling fans & new water pump handle the cooling. The list of new parts under the hood is long and include a new 22-gallon gas tank & Melling fuel pump, oil pump & pickup, new high torque starter & high amp performance alternator, wiring harness, heater core, new belts, all fresh fluids, and on & on! It would be dyno-tested and tuned prior to installation, making 329 horsepower and 400 ft. lbs. of torque.
Behind the engine is a new Tremec TKO 5-speed transmission built by Silver Sport Transmissions with their STX short throw kit with Hurst shifter, fresh clutch kit, custom driveshaft with high performance u-joints, and a 3.00:1 Traction-Loc rear axle professionally rebuilt by GT Performance Ford and fitted with Scott Drake traction bars. The original brake booster was rebuilt by Power Brake Booster Exchange and mated with overhauled front brake calipers, new lines, and all new rear brake components. The power steering system was completely rebuilt along with new 1” front drop springs and Koni STR shocks at all 4 corners of the suspension. Ford Performance Application headers feed a Magnaflow 2.5” stainless steel dual exhaust system with new chrome tips exiting the rear to make a truly glorious sound!
All parts and service receipts for the restoration are included along with a few progress pictures in a large binder for the next owner. All work was carried out between 2015 and 2018, with less than 3,000 miles on the engine. There can be little doubt that the 1967 Ford Mustang GT Fastback is one of the most important vehicles in all automotive history, a fact that is proven again and again at car shows and auctions the world over. With overseas desire for these great collector cars increasing every day, the demand is quickly starting to outpace the supply. Prices for Mustangs will only continue to rise and savvy buyers will seize the opportunity to acquire one before they get out of reach. Please call with additional questions and to secure this beautifully restored S-code Mustang GT Fastback before it is too late!
