For the 1938 model year, Chevrolet offered two versions of theMaster series vehicles. The Master was designated as Series HBwhile the Master Deluxe was designated as Series HA. Both serieswere offered in six different body styles, which included threevariations of the sedan, a two-door coach, a coupe and aconvertible. Mechanically, the 1938 models were a further evolutionof earlier models. They were powered by Chevrolet's famous inline,six-cylinder overhead valve engine that had a cubic inchdisplacement of 216.5 and produced 85 horsepower. The engine wasbacked up by a three-speed transmission which was mounted on a 112" wheelbase chassis. The cars were supplied with hydraulic brakesand 16" steel wheels. With an average weight of just 2,800 pounds, the 1938 Chevrolets had the perfect power to weight ratio. Theywere quick, nimble cars that were easy to drive. Chevrolets of thelate 1930s were well known for being reliable vehicles. Sales forthe 1938 model year were about 470,000, which proves how popularChevrolet had become-even during the height of the GreatDepression. Perhaps the sportiest model was the five-window coupeoffered in the 1938 Master Deluxe series. The coupe offeredseating for two with a large rear trunk as well as a small storagearea behind the front seat. This body style epitomized the art-decoperiod with its long hood, pontoon fenders, raked windshield anddramatically sloping rear deck. In 1938, the base price on thismodel was 714.00 and production total was just over 36,000, whichwas far less than the over 200,000 four-door sedans also producedduring this model year. This striking 1938 Chevrolet Master DeluxeCoupe is extremely handsome car that was the recipient of athorough and authentic restoration about twenty years ago. Sincebeing restored, this example has been well cared, regularly usedand always maintained. The body, fenders and floors are straightand sound. The doors and trunk lid fit the body with even gaps andmargins. The hood aligns properly with the radiator surround, cowland fenders. This car was always a sound and honest car. The periodcorrect, rich maroon paint has held up well. If you look reallyclose, there are some very minor blemishes that one would expectfrom an older restoration. The overall appearance of the paint isextremely nice with an even gloss throughout. The chrome andstainless trim items such as the grill, bumpers, bumper guards, andbody moldings are extremely nice and still have a strong andconsistent shine. The running boards have been recovered and showhardly any wear. This car has a great overall appearance. This carreally shows well from all angles. On the inside, the car wasreupholstered in a period correct, tan, cloth interior withmatching door panels and headliner. The upholstery shows hardly anywear. The art deco inspired dashboard has all of its proper gaugesand controls. As a Master Deluxe, this car is equipped with a banjosteering wheel, radio, heater, interior visors, and a glove boxclock. The dashboard and garnish moldings were properlywood-grained in a light, tan color, which nicely complements theother interior appointments and a new floor mat has been recentlyinstalled. Mechanically, this is a strong running car that alwaysstarts easily and goes down the road with the speed and agilitythat late 1930s Chevrolets are known for. The hydraulic brakes stopthe car firm and square. The steering is light and responsive. Theclutch and three-speed transmission operate smoothly. Under thehood, the engine compartment is very clean and well cared for. Thecar retains its original Delco ignition, starting and generatorsystems as well as its correct carburetor and air cleaner. Theoriginal 16" steel wheels have been fitted with newer, whitewalltires, trim rings and the correct deluxe hubcaps. The mileageindicated is just under 16,000, which is likely the mileage sincethe restoration was completed. Due to the popularity of thefive-window coupe, many 1936 through1940 Chevrolets have been madeinto street rods over the last several decades. Finding anoriginal, un-modified example of this rare body style has becomeextremely difficult. This example, with its eye-catching andcorrect restoration will be a great car for touring and showing.
