Launched in August 1965, the new Ford Bronco hit showrooms alongside the very successful Mustang unveiled just one year before. It was a robust project aimed at securing some of the market share away from the Jeep CJ-5 and International Scout. The first-generation Broncos were built solid with a body-on-frame platform with a perfectly sized 92” wheelbase, utilizing a radius arm/coil spring Dana front axle with track bar along with a Dana transfer case, and Ford's unequalled and dependable 9” rear axle. It allowed for tight maneuverability and highly capable off-road competence. As with all automotive success stories, the Bronco became a mainstream 4-wheel-drive competitor with many improvements over the years. By 1969, the 289ci V8 changed to the new 302ci V8, and in 1973 a new 3-speed automatic transmission was introduced as an option for the first time!
Offered here is a nicely restored 1973 Ford Bronco 4WD refinished in custom Blue Streak Metallic over Blue herringbone cloth/White vinyl combination interior for a sharp presentation. Under the hood lies its original 302ci V8 paired with a Holley 2-barrel carburetor and mated to a column-shifted C4 Automatic transmission with 3.50:1 rear axle ratio. Options include floor-shifted 4-wheel-drive selector, power brakes, power steering, front & rear chrome bumpers with overriders, dual sun visors, door arm rests, and more. During the restoration, it was fitted with a Classic Auto Air Perfect Fit under dash air conditioning system for a factory-inspired presentation.
This special truck was originally built in October 1972 and delivered new from the Denver, Colorado area, but must have made its way south early in life. It was most recently located by its current owner, along with the help of a longtime restoration friend, about 7 years ago parked in a Texas garage with a super solid body in very original condition. It made for a perfect foundation for a frame-up restoration. The body would be stripped of all chrome, trim, emblems, interior, window glass, and weather stripping before being professionally prepped for body work and a repaint in a new color. The rear quarter panels received new steel wheel openings for increased wheel/tire combinations using a common modification of matching the front fender wheel opening to the rears. These were skillfully welded in place by Dave Clark Auto Body of St. Charles, MO to ensure no filler or body puddy would be necessary. The finished paintwork for the body and roof was completed by Anchor Paint & Body in Winfield, IL.
The interior would receive full soundproofing along with fresh floor carpeting, rebuilt seats with new foams and upholstery by Dan's Auto Upholstery of Crystal City, MO; new locking center console with cup holders; all new wiring; rebuilt steering column fitted with a new custom wood steering wheel; custom Bluetooth audio system by Audio Ace in Maryland Heights, MO; all new tinted window glass & seals; body weather stripping. Underneath, a new single 22-gallon fuel tank was fitted; 15” Ultra polished wheels with General Grabber tires measuring 31x10.5R15LT; side nerf bars, and exhaust system mounted from the muffler back was installed. The engine was overhauled by Frank Newberry of Fredericktown, MO at approximately 82,000 miles with stock internals using original, factory components. It has about 2,500 miles driven since completion. Most parts for this restoration were sourced from Tom's Bronco Parts, Bronco Hut, Dennis Carpenter, and Jeff's Bronco Graveyard.
This is a great opportunity to add a first-generation Bronco to your collection without the hassle of major restoration. This example is a solid example that was clearly not over restored in nut-and-bolt fashion, but certainly done to a high standard to remain driver friendly and dependable. Please feel free to call with additional questions or schedule a chance to review this Bronco in person. Thanks as always for looking!
